The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.
The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.
This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a potential flight.
Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns
In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said information from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the tracking monitor to ensure success in his getaway".
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his son.
His offspring, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.
The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I call on you to struggle with us."
He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the potential of the former president's move to embassies near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a background of organizing to seek refuge through a consular facility", a announcement said.
The court filing highlights that the US embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.
Worldwide Consequences
His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist American leader President Trump, leading him to impose a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.
The former president is being held in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a detention review on the following day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with tracking devices.
They also asked that Bolsonaro be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other health problems.
Details of Guilty Verdict
He was determined responsible of orchestrating a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, President Lula.
High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which included plans to murder his opponent and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The conspiracy was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the backing of the armed forces officials. The current president was inaugurated without issue on the first day of 2023.
But a week later, on January 8th, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the national capital, Brasília.
The police took action and around 1,500 people were detained.
The justices found that the protesters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, bring back stability and return him to office.
At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also prohibited from running for public office until 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.
The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 presidential election.
